Stuck inside because of rain? It’s looking like it’s going to be a dark and stormy night…and morning…and night…in Santa Cruz this week, but don’t worry. We’ve compiled a Top 10 List of Things To Do Inside When It’s Raining Outside for our guests staying at Beach Haven at Seabright while waiting out the storms. You can read it too.
Top 10 Things To Do Inside When It’s Raining Outside
No. 1. Catch up on some reading. Cozy up next to the gas fireplace and get back to that book you’re been neglecting and saving for a rainy day. You probably brought your own, but if not, we have a few books and magazines available for your reading pleasure from our own collection along with a few random ones left by previous renters. There’s also a free Lending Library Book Box just a couple of houses down the street where you can borrow others. (But that would mean going outside.)
No. 2. Get organized. It almost sounds like work, but now is a good time to go through all those ancient emails clogging up your in-box and purge. Dump old phone apps you don’t ever use while you’re at it. Organize your photos and back them up. Make lists. Change your passwords. Update your address/contacts list. Clean out your purse or wallet. Spend a little time doing something constructive and you won’t feel guilty about goofing off later when the weather breaks.
No 3. Listen to music. Music is good for the soul. And it’s good for your health too. Studies have found that music therapy has a positive effect on a broad range of physical and psychological conditions including dementia, anxiety, depression and cancer. Take some time to listen to some of your favorite Night Ranger tunes and be open to discovering new music. Connect to our Sonos system and you can play what’s on your mobile device or enjoy some of our awesome Pandora options including, Stormy Day R&B/Soul Radio and Stormy Day Beats Radio stations created for such an occasion. Download the Sonos Controller app for iPhone and iPad or for Android if you don’t already have it and get your groove on.
No. 4. Play cards or classic board games. We have all the great ones to choose from – Monopoly, Cribbage, Backgammon, Operation, Uno, Boggle, Jenga, Chutes & Ladders, Cards Against Humanity, and Sorry! Oh, and Yahtzee anyone? If you’re looking for a new card game to play, one of our favorites is Kings in Corners for 2 to 4 players.
No. 5. Meditate. Maybe you’re already doing it and making it a regular part of your day. Or maybe you’re a newbie and think it’s just a bunch of new age nonsense, but meditation is actually good for you and it definitely reduces stress. And too much stress is bad for your health. There is also some research that indicates that meditation may help with allergies, anxiety, asthma, binge eating (see No. 6), cancer, depression, fatigue, heart disease, high blood pressure, pain, sleep difficulties (see No. 10) and substance abuse (see No. 7). There are lots of great self guided meditation apps for adults and kids that you can use yourself, like The Mindfulness App, Calm and our personal favorite, Headspace. Do it for just 5 minutes a day. And you have the added bonus of the soothing sound of the rain going on in the background to really set the tone while you zen out.
No. 6. Cook something. Rainy days are awesome for staying in and cooking up a bunch of stick-to-your-bones, probably bad for you comfort food for family and friends. And we have everything you need in our fully-stocked kitchen including newish stainless steel appliances, high quality Calphalon cookware, pots and pans, and actually sharp Wusthof chef knives, to baking trays and pans, assorted bowls, utensils, and more. No. 7. Day drinking! Don’t go crazy, but you’re on vacation dammit and stuck inside. Go ahead and open the complementary bottle of wine we provide for our guests and enjoy a glass or two while partaking in any or all of the aforementioned rainy day activities, or spending way too much time on YouTube. You earned it.
No. 8. Do some online shopping. This can be especially dangerous when you’re a little bored, especially when combined with No. 7, but take advantage of the high-speed wireless Internet and get yourself or a loved-one a little something nice to take your mind off how much you’d rather be outside.
No. 9. Netflix and… Spend the day and/or night binge watching all your questionable favorites and enjoy the dopamine high your brain produces in the process until you can’t stand it any more. Make some popcorn and maybe crack open a second bottle of wine and feel like you’ve accomplished something after getting fully caught up on Fuller House. When you’re ready for a break, you can…
