If the weather is looking a little too dreary and grey and you’re looking for things to do in Santa Cruz other than the beach, and with just the right amount of weird, you can go dare to defy gravity at the legendary Mystery Spot.
The Mystery Spot is a popular local tourist attraction located in the redwoods just a short drive away from Beach Haven at Seabright where the laws of gravity and physics seem to completely disappear. It’s been attracting visitors since it opened in 1939. Tour guides walk you through the steep, tilting property, explain the history, give demonstrations that appear to defy gravity to showcase the site's unusual effects – balls roll uphill, people stand at impossible angles and lean over without falling over, water flows uphill – and tell bad jokes along the way. (A lot of them.)
The Mystery Spot has amazed and perplexed hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world, and many return time and time again to experience these puzzling variations of gravity, perspective, and height.
It’s kitschy, family-friendly and worth a visit at least once while visiting Santa Cruz. And you get to come home with the highly coveted Mystery Spot Bumper Sticker. The tour itself lasts 45 minutes and then you’re free to grab a snack, hike the trail, or peruse the gift shop of all things Mystery Spot.
Buy tickets in advance online or by calling (831) 423-8897 in the morning (The Mystery Spot frequently sells out around Noon) and be sure to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time or you will miss your tour.
Parking is limited and costs $5.00 per vehicle and is payable upon arrival by cash or check only.
Prepare to have your mind blown.
